Foster / How it works
How fostering works
Fostering saves lives. Every cat in a foster home is a cat we can pull from a bad situation. Here's exactly what to expect.
The timeline
- Day 0
We deliver
We bring the cat, all the supplies, and walk through care in your home. You'll have our number for any questions, 24/7.
- Week 1
Settle in
The cat decompresses, learns your routine, starts to trust. We check in daily by text. It's normal for them to hide at first.
- Weeks 2-6
Care and prep
Routine care, vet visits as needed, snap photos and notes for the adoption listing. This is the fun part — watching personality emerge.
- Adoption
Goodbye and hello
Once our vet clears them, we list them. You can meet adopters, or we handle it. Saying goodbye is the hardest part. Then a new cat shows up and the cycle starts again.
Who does what
- All food, litter, and supplies
- 100% of veterinary care (spay/neuter, vaccines, meds, emergencies)
- Carrier, bed, toys, scratchers — anything the cat needs
- Transport to and from vet appointments if you can't drive
- 24/7 phone and text support from experienced volunteers
- The adoption process — screening, meet and greets, paperwork
- A quiet room or space, separate from resident pets
- Daily feeding, fresh water, and litter scooping
- Gentle attention and socialization (15 to 30 minutes a day)
- Communication — quick texts when things go well or sideways
- A ride to occasional vet visits when possible
- A willingness to let go when adoption day comes
What it really takes
30 minutes to a few hours daily depending on the cat. Bottle babies are full time; adults are minimal.
One room is enough for most placements. A bedroom, bathroom, or spare office works.
2 weeks to 3 months on average. Short term respite (a weekend) is also welcome.
