Foster / FAQ
Foster questions
The most common things would-be fosters ask. If your question isn't here, reach out; we'd rather answer ten questions than have you stay on the fence.
What if I fall in love?
It happens, and we call it a "foster fail" (a happy one). You get first right of adoption at the standard fee. We won't be mad.
What if it's not working out?
Tell us. We'll move the cat to another foster, no judgment. The match has to work for both of you, and there are always other fosters who can step in.
Do I need cat experience?
No. We'll match you with a cat that fits your experience level and teach you everything you need. Bottle babies have specific training; adult cats are pretty intuitive.
Can I travel while fostering?
Yes, with notice. We'll arrange a temporary foster or take the cat back into our network while you're away. For longer trips, time it between placements if you can.
What does it cost me?
Nothing required. Food, litter, supplies, and vet care are on us. Some fosters chip in optional treats or toys; entirely up to you.
Can my resident cat catch something?
We screen incoming cats for the big stuff (FeLV/FIV, URI) and ask that you keep fosters separate from resident pets, especially in the first 2 weeks. Your resident cat should be up to date on vaccines.
How do I say goodbye?
It's bittersweet, always. Most fosters find that watching the cat go to a great home makes the next foster feel meaningful. You can stay in touch with adopters if both sides want to.
Can I foster if I have a dog?
Often yes, especially with a separate room for the foster. Some cats are cat-only; we'll match accordingly. Mention your dog on the application.
How long is a typical placement?
2 weeks to 3 months. Kittens often adopt faster than adults. Short term respite (a weekend) is also welcome.
Ready to give it a try?
Even a short term respite saves a life. We'll meet you where you are.
